Hello Met Radio community!
It’s Karen and Randa, and we saw Monét X Change’s show “High Heels, Worn Up Knees” during her stop at the Just for Laughs festival on Saturday, October 3rd at the Bluma Appel Theatre in Toronto.
When we saw that Monét was coming to town, we both jumped at the chance to attend and cover her show. It definitely lived up to the hype and we’re excited to share how it went!
As soon as Monét hit the stage, we knew we were going to get an iconic performance given her jaw-droppingly fierce outfit (right down to the shoes) and voluminous blonde hair. We don’t know what else there is to say – the sparkles were sparkling!
Out of the gate she was filled with energy, and kept going for the entire hour. At some points, we couldn’t stop laughing. Have your cheeks ever hurt after a comedy show?
Monét kept us on our toes while she strutted in her heels, making use of the entire stage. Speaking of keeping us on our toes – it was a risque set with some memorable physical comedy and prop-work with the microphone (if you know, you know).
What stood out to us the most was how much Monét and the crowd were able to play off each other to make the show feel especially funny and special. People in the crowd were cheering, hootin’ and hollerin’, and throwing their own jokes back at Monét, making the comedian laugh at several points.
We definitely felt like it was the best comedy experience we’ve ever had. For those of us lucky enough to be there, it felt like a part of a community where we were all just gabbing and laughing together. Bren D’Souza was the opening comic for this show. They also brought the sparkles in both their outfit and humour, with their bedazzled cargo pants and relatable humour. Their storytelling and flow were great, and the topics also matched the energy of Monét’s. It was a great pairing. Somehow, in a theatre of hundreds of people, it felt like being in a room full of friends where the vibe keeps getting funnier and funnier.
Like Monét, we’re both out of the hump of our mid-20s. Once you hit your late 20s and early 30s, life starts to look a bit different as people go down their own paths. Some people choose to settle down into traditional dynamics with families and kids, whereas others keep pushing and charting the unknown. We always hear about the stories of school, college, and marriages. Life after 27 is like a new coming of age. But there are still ways we can support and show up for each other – whether that’s attending your friends’ kids’ recitals or making sure to show up to a friend’s birthday party. Because regardless of how our lives turn out, we can still be true to ourselves and supportive to the people around us.
There’s no such thing as too much fun, but at some point your knees will start hurting and you’ll feel those crazy parties the next day. But that doesn’t mean you need to hang your hat and quit – it just means you gotta change how you have a good time. That’s something we want to bring into our lives.
Monét’s energy is different than it was when she was hitting the scene on Rupaul’s Drag Race in 2018. She placed 6th in season 10 and was crowned Miss Congeniality, a testament to her fierceness as a performer. She’s matured, and as her loyal audience of a decade we’ve matured with her. We can’t wait to keep going on this journey together.
For those that missed out on the show, you can check out her work on Instagram @monetxchange and YouTube @monetxchangeofficial. Whether you know her from her time on Rupaul’s Drag Race or Traitors, or are new to her work, we think you’ll have a great time.
While Monét doesn’t have another Canadian stop on the tour scheduled, hopefully she’ll return to Just For Laughs festival next year. We’d love to cover it and share how it went!
