FINNEAS is widely known for his critically acclaimed and trailblazing work with his global superstar sister, Billie Eilish, with whom he writes, produces and tours. He is also a hot commodity in the music industry, working with artists like Lizzy McAlpine, Kid Cudi and Justin Bieber. Although his production is his most notorious work (and is excellent), his solo work showcases his solid and beautiful vocals while providing a more personal side to Finneas O’Connell.

For Cryin’ Out Loud is FINNEAS’ sophomore studio album, showcasing a softer and sensual side of his solo work. Here, he takes a step away from the experimental, alternative pop he makes with his sister and takes on a brighter, more rock-based sound akin to Declan Mckenna. The production is up to O’Connell’s excellent standards, albeit it leans more on the instrumental side, with plenty of drums and guitars replacing the electronic sounds of his typical work.

This instrumental sound is most apparent on the second track, “What’s it Gonna Take to Break Your Heart?” which could slip into a Silk Sonic project. This sexy track hinges on an awesomely jazzy baseline, making it sound straight out of a hazy dive bar set. O’Connell’s impressive range and deep, clear vocals highlight the themes of being hopelessly in love with someone who intimidates you, a thread throughout the album.

The title track encapsulates this theme with a killer drumbeat intro that is made to open a tour. “For Cryin’ Out Loud” is the catchy pop-rock single off the album that divulges into the frustrating but intoxicating relationship between FINNEAS and a mystery woman with lyrics like “You’re wearing me out, but I love you the same” and “You’re running your mouth, but I’m singing your praises.” This “will they won’t they” situation is the baseline of the album, despite FINNEAS’ long-term relationship with influencer-actor Claudia Sulewski.

Undoubtedly, the album’s highlight is its ballads, with the crescendo of the album being “Family Feud.” This song perfectly encapsulates his unconditional love for Billie Eilish and will surely shatter any older sibling’s heart. As FINNEAS sings, “And you’re only 22, and there’s nothing I can do, I’ve made mistakes you’ll make them too, A part of me is part of you, just a different shade of blue,” he captures the bittersweet feeling of watching your siblings grow up, with the added anxiety of not being able to shield Eilish from the tribulations fame. It is not only a highlight of the album but also FINNEAS’ solo career, and it is sure to tug on heartstrings and nostalgia.

Although it may not be as famous or Grammy-adorned as his work with Eilish, For Cryin’ Out Loud allows FINNEAS to showcase his outstanding production skills while giving a masterclass on layering harmonies highlighting his incredible voice. Next time you hear “Birds of a Feather” on the radio, take it as an opportunity to give FINNEAS’ solo work a shot, as the album is sure to make you fall in love with the voice and production behind your favourite pop hits.
