The Mayor’s Economic Action Plan, banning U.S. companies from bidding on city contracts, passed unanimously at council on Wednesday, but not without pushback.
Several councillors raised concerns about the effect retaliatory measures could have on taxpayers and the city’s economy. Councillor James Pasternak flagged that appearing too “anti-American” could potentially alienate visitors from the U.S, hurting Toronto’s hospitality and hotel industry. According to Statistics Canada, at last count, approx. 199,100 people are employed in the accommodation and food services industry.
Pasternak said economic nationalism as a response to economic nationalism is a dangerous road and the city should proceed with caution to sustain their relationship with the American people through the trade war.
