Public space advocates push to define a new culture around washrooms

15 July 2025 / by Mia Johnson

Designers, architects and creative thinkers from Canada and abroad are answering nature’s call. Toronto needs more public washrooms.

The Toronto Public Space Committee’s launched the To the Loo! Toronto Toilet Design Challenge, a global design competition, back in March and have received over 50 submissions since. To review the works, the committee appointed a jury full of architects, artists, academics and designers. On July 10, the jury selected one overall winner, two runners-up and six additional projects to feature in a 2-month long exhibition hosted at 401 Richmond St. in Toronto.

On opening night, last Thursday, designs were revealed, toilet paper was thrown and winners took home their crowns. Met Radio took part in some toilet talk with the winners from Hamilton, Ontario— architects Alea Reid and Petra Matar, Design Partners in Architecture and Interiors—  while also catching up with jury member Christopher Pandolfi who says plans to expand Toronto’s washroom network are well overdue.
