Toronto saw the worst air quality the city has ever seen last Friday.
The next day, Canada’s largest athletic fundraiser — the eighteenth annual Ride to Conquer Cancer hosted by the Princess Margaret Cancer Foundation — was scheduled to take place with over 4,500 riders signed up, including many cancer survivors.
With opening ceremonies set to begin at Sherway Gardens in Etobicoke at 8a.m. the next morning, organizers still made it happen on short notice, rallying days before and consulting meteorologists up to the last hour on how to proceed.
With the index eventually dropping, the ride went on, breaking a new record of $20.6 million in support of life-saving cancer-research. Here’s how they did it.
