Grief in three dimensions – Canadian composer/playwright talks about the musical that grew up with her

A musical that saw its first run at the Toronto Fringe Festival nine years ago is back, and this time it’s moving uptown to the Ed Mirvish Theatre.

In her six-time Dora award-winning musical, Life After, award winning playwright Britta Johnson tells a story about a sixteen-year old girl who is grappling with the loss of her father.

Johnson began the writing process for Life After when she was only sixteen. The material has undergone notable transformation since its first debut at the Toronto Fringe Festival nine years ago. Through this process, Johnson connected with a younger self in “an altered state of grief” and with cast members along the way who have told their stories and found community in shared loss.

Britta Johnson joins CJTM in conversation on how Life After’s matured as she’s grown up and how she’s managed to capture that initial intimacy she found at sixteen.

The musical will open at the Ed Mirvish Theatre in Toronto this week for a four-week run.
