A new affordable housing site, the first City owned property to be leased and operated exclusively by an Indigenous organization in Toronto, is well underway.
Approximately a third of the 294 units at 140 Merton Street will be designated as affordable housing. The developing company behind the project are with the Missanabie Cree First Nation. With the city, they’re prioritizing Missanabie Cree members, Indigenous and non-Indigenous seniors on the supportive housing waitlist to fill each spot.
Joseph Sayers is the General Manager for the Missanabie Cree First Nation Business Corporation. Sayers says Indigenous elders— seniors, Indigenous seniors— are particularly vulnerable right now and need secure housing.
