City urges local consumers to support Canadian businesses as tariff threat remains

Rising U.S. protectionism is sending our country into disarray. Trade measures are causing significant uncertainty for Toronto’s economy, which facilitates $123 billion in trade with the U.S. annually.

Mayor Olivia Chow says that tariff threats are demanding a less polite response than is typical for Canadians. The City has a strategy in place to protect the local economy and the workers it employs— starting with the city’s new “Love Local” campaign, that’s urging residents to shop local. The campaign aims for economic benefits to remain within the community.

Canadian-owned business fronts were under intense economic pressure during the pandemic to make rent, to avoid closure. And city councillor Paula Fletcher warns all that could happen again under a tariff war.
