Anastazja’s Top 10 Songs of 2024

30 December 2024 / by Anastazja Marut

Here at Met Radio, we’re celebrating the year 2024 with a series of lists rounding up our favourites of the year! We’ve invited station volunteers and staff to share their top ten of anything that encapsulates their year in pop culture (or otherwise). New lists to surprise and delight will be dropping on the Met Radio website every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday this December!

Hi, I’m Anastazja, a volunteer at Met Radio and the writer behind some of the album reviews you see on our website! As an avid music listener and Spotify Wrapped enthusiast, I have no shortage of song recommendations, but this is a top ten list, so I’ll have to be brief. I’ve undertaken the painstaking task of narrowing down my top ten favourite songs released this year. Here’s what made the list:

  1. Next Semester – Twenty One Pilots

“Next Semester” is one of those songs where I remember exactly where I was and what I was doing when it dropped. Hard-hitting drums, powerful lyrics, an emotional send-off overtop the gentle strumming of Tyler’s ukulele. This is Twenty One Pilots at their very best and, yes, it is somehow even better live. Dare I say, the best song in their discography?

  1. Oldies Station – Twenty One Pilots

A heartfelt, tear-inducing song about pushing through hard times and getting older. So many songs these days are lacking a solid bridge, but “Oldies Station” has you covered. Another song I was incredibly lucky to hear live this year.

  1. SEMPRE UN PO’ DI TE – Mr.Rain

It’s only fair that Mr.Rain, who released my second-favourite album this year, gets a top five spot on this list. I love a good ballad and he delivers every single time. The final thirty seconds when the piano builds and builds and his gentle voice becomes strained never fails to give me goosebumps.

  1. Suuren päivän ilta – KUUMAA

Something I love about Finnish is the abundance of sound similarity. Every word seems to bounce off the next and it’s just music to my ears (pun intended). This one in particular really scratches that itch for me and the beat is one I simply can’t get enough of.

  1. Sinceramente – Annalisa

A song that begs to be sung at the top of your lungs (even if you can’t quite hit the higher notes). “Sinceramente” is an upbeat pop anthem that doesn’t let up until the moment it’s over at which point you’ll want to immediately hit play again.

  1. La noia – Angelina Mango

One of the most unique songs I’ve had the pleasure of discovering this year. The beat is so addictive that I quite literally cannot help dancing every time it comes on. There’s a distinct Latin feel to it yet it’s still undeniably Italian.

  1. Autiomaa – Käärijä

This is one I highly recommend watching the music video for as you listen (one of my favourites I’ve seen this year). Käärijä’s lyricism is typically beyond my Finnish comprehension, but the emotions in this one truly transcend language.

  1. The Soprano & Midnight Wonderings – Bastille, BIM

A classic piano melody, slow tempo, and a stunningly beautiful voice. Of all the songs on this list, I must say this one has the best vocals by far. BIM has collaborated with Bastille for a few years now and her voice is the one you hear, with Dan providing the backing vocals.

  1. Rim Tim Tagi Dim – Baby Lasagna

This song was all over my timeline back in January and it’s still as great now as it was the first time I listened to it. Yes, “Meow, cat, please, meow back” is a real lyric in the song, but who ever said lyrics always have to be poetic? You just have to listen to it for yourself.

  1. Training Season – Dua Lipa

The general public may have been quick to move on from Radical Optimism, but not I! Dua Lipa is one of my go-to’s for a quick pop fix and “Training Season” fits the bill perfectly. I mean, you’ve got a catchy beat and chorus that stand out against her other songs, and the orchestral version live from the Royal Albert Hall? Phenomenal.
