Toronto continues to see an increase of people experiencing unsheltered homelessness while encampment numbers rise. Yet, the share of homelessness in shelters remains consistent.
This became clear after the city released the 2024 Street Needs Assessment, a homelessness survey, this month. Toronto’s homelessness population skyrockets, but have little options to secure temporary housing.
A new city-owned shelter opens its doors to the Queen West neighbourhood today. The site at 629 Adelaide St. W will be operated by St. Felix Centre, a registered charity serving marginalized communities who are experiencing homeless, food insecurity and other complex challenge. The centre is looking to relieve some of that pressure on the shelter system with 50 beds total.
