Toronto is seeing more lithium-ion battery fires — Expert says misuse and poor oversight are to blame

11 July 2025 / by Mia Johnson

As cases of lithium-ion battery-related fires climb in Toronto, officials warn the public that mishandling and improper charging of everyday use devices, like smartphones or electric bicycles, could lead to fire or explosion. Toronto Fire Services say they’ve responded to 43 fires linked so far this year, according to a news release. That’s a 162 per cent jump from 2022.

“We’re seeing a concerning rise in fires caused by lithium-ion batteries, many of which are preventable,” said Jim Jessop, chief and general manager of TFS, in that same release Monday.

Randy Narine, a veteran firefighter and researcher in the clean energy sector who has dedicated most of his life to protecting front-line workers and first responders, says with public safety on the line, this is more than just an issue of individual responsibility.

Narine has been lobbying for stronger regulations around uncertified batteries and warning the public about the dangers of using them improperly. He spoke to CJTM News.
