FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Toronto, ON – Met Radio, Toronto Metropolitan University’s campus and community radio station is excited to announce our new name and call letters!
Formerly known as CJRU, after consultations with the community and stakeholders, the decision to rebrand the station was made to better reflect our spirit and vision and to move the station forward as a multimedia broadcaster. Met Radio embodies the idea of a station that is open, inclusive, and a platform for diverse voices and perspectives in the city of Toronto.
“We’re excited to share this next step with our community,” said station manager Elissa Matthews. “We’re proud of the work that we’ve done over the past several years as CJRU, but we feel that Met Radio and our new call sign, CJTM, better reflect where we want to go.”
Met Radio provides a mix of music, news, and talk programming, with a focus on promoting local artists, activists, and community groups. The station will continue to serve as a training ground for TMU students interested in broadcasting, digital media and journalism. Our mission is to become an integral part of our campus and a leader in the multi-media redefinition of radio beyond air.
“We are proud that our station is part of a storied history of radio on TMU’s campus,” says Matthews, “we feel that the new name was a necessary step in moving forward.”
In 2021 Toronto Metropolitan University, formerly known as Ryerson University, began the process of changing its name, one part of a much larger process of Truth and Reconciliation. The following spring TMU announced their name change and the beginning of the Next Chapter.
Changing the station’s call sign and legal name are a small but integral part of the work that Met Radio has taken on in the process of Truth and Reconciliation. Met Radio’s legal name will also change in the calendar year.
Listeners can tune in to the new Met Radio on 1280 AM or stream online at metradio.ca.
