Saskatchewan artist ZOCHI has been on my radar since North By North East last June. I am captivated by ZOCHI’s sincere lyrics, expressive vocals, and bold beats.

On January 23rd, she released “What You Want,” a vulnerable single that tackles the complexities of love. More on this earworm shortly, but first, a bit about ZOCHI.

In 2024, ZOCHI released her debut EP Afrikaanman Fairytale (AFT). In a recent interview, ZOCHI reflected on the significance of this EP, specifically the single “Alone (Whole Again)”.

“That was the song that really got me a lot of visibility in Saskatchewan. And I got my first ever Canada-wide nationwide play on CBC The Block, and I didn’t know that they were going to pick it up at all.”

ZOCHI’s feature on The Block made her realize that she could pursue music as a career. ZOCHI’s latest single, “What You Want,” is her perception of love.

She shares, “For me, especially so it’s like Unconditional love but complicated, hurtful, confusing, but still devoted to keep loving. All the vices we use to get over love or understand love…. Being in love that is not reciprocated, but you keep trying…. Trying to fix somebody trying to fix love.”

This range of emotions is conveyed through the gripping beat, raw vocals, and lyrics such as, “been through the love another day, been through the lows another way.”

This single is 10/10 as I love the complex lyrics, and how the unique melody line brings out ZOCHI’s raw emotion. I am excited to hear what’s next for her.

“What You Want” is available to stream on all platforms.
