Halloween came early at the Bovine Sex Club thanks to Toronto singer-songwriter Carina who hosted a Pink Halloween. Everyone came dressed in pink-themed outfits. There were four musicians who performed, each with a unique musical style.
One of the featured musicians, Ryan Sykes, is a singer-songwriter from Hamilton. His music influences include Ariana Grande and Selena Gomez. During his set, Sykes performed his songs “Anxiety” and “Love Yourself,” which are some of my favourites from his album, Grateful, released on July 29, 2022. The messages are extremely relatable. I also love how the simple production allows me to take in Sykes’ emotional and warm vocals. Sykes engaged the crowd by sharing the inspiration for each song and had everyone up and dancing.
Next was Marsy. Marsy’s music is fun and catchy. There is a lot of detail in the production, such as the use of a construction saw.
Another highlight was Nicole Habber who has an electrifying stage presence. The setlist included tracks “Galaxy,” “Poison,” and “25.”
Finally, the headliner was Carina. This is my third time seeing Carina perform live. Carina’s sets are mini dance parties, and her voice reminds me of Ariana Grande. She started off with her song “In The Moment” which she wrote during the pandemic about trying to stay present with her family with out to much anxiety. She also performed a new original called “On My Way,” which she is dropping in November. (There are some teasers on her Instagram @Carianaa.b) One of my favourite moments of her set was her cover of Sabrina Carpenter’s song “Espresso.” Her energy was contagious and the crowd was singing every word.
This was a 10/10 night for me. This was my first time at the Bovine and I love that it is a fun intimate space. I also love how supportive the crowd was to each performer. Loud applauses, and singing and dancing along with them. Each performer had a natural stage presence. I’m excited for the future of Carina’s pink-themed performance series. A past event she hosted was a Pink Christmas.
