Toronto Comicon was in full swing from March 14 to 16. Comicon is unique as it is a multi-fandom event catered to a wide age range, including young children. This was my first convention and it was exciting to take it all in.
The Metro Convention Centre was packed with eager fans showing off their cosplay, which I learned can take days to create, as part of the fun is making the costumes from scratch. One of my favourites was the costume of Lunette from the iconic TV show, The Big Comfy Couch. Fans were also lining up for autographs and photos with their favourite actors and exploring the various booths and vendors, such as a Star Wars booth where they had a replica of a robot that fans were encouraged to touch. There were also friendship bracelets and, of course, comics.
The celebrity lineup included Jared Padalecki, Mark Shepard, James Marsters, Jim Beaver and Ruth Connell. Since Supernatural is one of my favourite fantasy shows, it was only fitting that I got a photo with Ruth as she played one of my favourite characters, Rowena. Although celebrity photo-ops were fast-paced, Ruth was super kind and had a brief conversation with my friend and I.
One of my other favourite parts of the convention was Artist Alley where artist displayed and sold their work including prints, pins, and posters. Luis Neto (@spidersaiyan on all platforms) is an artist who creates prints inspired by his childhood fandoms which he shared are “mostly video games, anime, and comics. Those have kinda found their way back around and taken form as prints now.”
Comicon 2025 was 10/10! I enjoyed seeing all the creativity and passion for fandom. I am looking forward to Fan Expo this summer, and already manifesting the celebrity guest list.
