Luke Elliot is a singer/songwriter and multi-instrumentalist from Saskatchewan. On September 26, he released a reflective and resilient single, “Do You Wonder,” focusing on the healing process after a toxic relationship.

In an interview with Luke, he shared how writing this song helped him during this time. He said,

“It gave me the strength to be like I know that I can go through something, I can feel whatever I need to feel during the situation and after the situation, and I know that I can harness it and turn it into something that furthers my healing.”

The production is warm and inviting, reminding me of the relaxed ambiance at a café.

Recording this song was special as Luke collaborated with close friends, Walt Jeworski and Merv XX Gotti. Jeworski is a producer and engineer who worked with artists including Gotti, Zochi, and LOA. The song was mostly recorded in Gotti’s living room, and he also sang backup vocals and played electric guitar, which is heard in the middle of the song.

The track opens with an acoustic guitar and Luke’s emotional vocals. In the chorus, delicate piano is added, and the ascending notes feel similar to climbing metaphorical steps. This piano line further enhances the lyrical aspect of this section, as Luke is questioning whether people recognize the consequences of their manipulative and hurtful actions. This theme is conveyed in this line,

“Left with nothing, how about you? Do you wonder too?”

One of my favourite elements in the instrumentation is the triumphant electric guitar line, which is heard after the first chorus and again in the final chorus. To me, it drives home the message of healing. I also enjoy Gotti’s backup vocals as his higher range seamlessly complements Luke’s lower vocals, adding a soothing texture of comfort and hope.

In my opinion, “Do You Wonder” is a powerful reminder that music is medicine. It is heartfelt and honest, emphasizing that we are not alone.
