Housewife launched their new indie-pop album Girl of the Hour; a collection of new and previously released songs. The soundtrack brings fresh and new melodies with rich tones. The quality of the sound really brings a spirit of intimacy.

Housewife’s only current member is Brighid Fry, who is 21 years old and from Toronto. She is not a new performer; the band has previously released albums since 2017. Housewife launched a solo album titled You’ll Be Forgiven in 2022, and now she is back, generating memorable indie-pop hits. Throughout the years, Housewife has grown as an artist and embarked on a journey of self-discovery. In 2021, she helped to set up the Canadian branch of Music Declares Emergency.

Girl of the Hour talks about her experience of falling in love with a friend and how exhausting it was. “Work Song” talks about feeling unsatisfied with your life path. It is very common to reflect on where we are and where we want to be, it is normal to be confused. It’s definitely a time when many people experience doubt. In verse two she uses the phrase: “Climbing out of the holes that I made / Now it’s getting cliché to fall in again” The line sounds quite poetic and it seems to express a feeling of struggling to overcome past mistakes or challenges, almost like trying to escape a cycle that keeps repeating. It is a great song for those times when someone feels overwhelmed or disorganized. It really captures those messy moments in life.

Another song that caught my attention is “I Lied.” In this track, she addresses the point of being bisexual, especially in the pre-chorus:

“I’ll make sure you get home safe but I’m not staying over / Okay, just a little taste, at least until we’re sober / All our friends are catching on cause / When I said there’s nothing going on / I lied, I lied, I lied.” Bisexual people often feel pressured to conform to societal norms, which can lead them to hide their true preferences. Sometimes, they may identify as homosexual to avoid judgment, even if it doesn’t reflect their reality. It is complex. The song is played with electric guitars and it brings a huge energy. As the final beats of the drums echo, the song concludes the EP beautifully.

The lyrics reflect a variety of personal experiences as Fry expresses her feelings and emotions through music. Girl of the Hour signifies a change in Housewife’s sounds, transitioning from their earlier folk influences to a more grunge alternative style. The EP showcases lively guitar work alongside its songwriting, creating a dreamy ambiance that evolves as the song progresses with tracks like “I Lied” featuring catchy guitar riffs. Fry has distinctive vocal features which are expressed in the lyrics. She is a great singer and an excellent performer with a soft voice.
