Met Radio’s Doc Shop is a podcast series showcasing the work of first-time audio documentary makers, back now for its second season!

This season features works created by participants in Met Radio’s Winter/Spring Audio Documentary Incubator workshop series. These docs traverse rich emotional and geographical terrain: ever tossed and turned with climate anxiety? Experienced the creeping shame of getting your first period? Grappled with figuring out your future and trying to make your immigrant parents proud? Felt the rush of being a sports fan finding a league of their own? Get swept away in these stories and more, as we travel from High Park to Little Jamaica, to Southwestern Ontario’s Six Nations Reserve to Iran and back again for stories of family, belonging, community, and change.

Listen to all the documentaries here and check out Season One here.

This program was funded by the Community Radio Fund of Canada’s Radiometres grant.

One Bloody Conversation at a Time by Kaelin Caporicci

Why has menstruation always been something so uncomfortable to talk about? In One Bloody Conversation at a Time, Kaelin addresses the embarrassment and shame attached with menstruation to demonstrate how these feelings alongside stigma prevent open conversations that bring awareness to menstruation and those lacking access to period care. It’s time to start talking so things can start changing.

Backstitch by Chantelle Belyea

Backstitch is a short documentary exploring one woman’s journey from learning to sew as a young girl in Iran to building a new life in Canada through tailoring. Through memories of migration, family, and the quiet artistry of working with fabric by hand, the documentary reflects on resilience and the skills passed between generations. Like the sewing technique it is named after, Backstitch moves backward and forward through time, tracing how she stitched together a livelihood, a home, and a lasting legacy for her family.

Tales From the Endz by Moe Abdillahi

Gentrification is changing the history and culture of Toronto Black communities like Little Jamaica . The situation requires attention because of new developments and transit routes like the Eglinton Crosstown LRT that has recently opened after a lengthy period of construction work. Due to gentrification, the neighborhood’s African and Caribbean community are experiencing increased threats from rising costs, business shutdowns and loss of cultural heritage. By talking to someone from the community, we discover solutions through community-based approaches which include community land trusts, equitable development initiatives, and cultural heritage protection programs.
