The Polaris Music Prize is awarded annually for the best full-length Canadian album, regardless of genre, album sales, or record label.
The top ten contenders were revealed today. Artists in the running for winning the award and $50,000 prize include Toronto R&B soul crooner Daniel Caesar, as well as indie rock band Partner, with their first Polaris appearance.
A number of Indigenous artists also join the shortlist this year. Classically trained opera singer Jeremy Dutcher blends post-classical arrangements with traditional Wolastoq First Nations, while Snotty Nose Rez Kids weave their words and stories through contemporary hip-hop and rap.
Quebecois representation is also strong on the short list, with Jean-Michel Blais, Hubert Lenoir, and Pierre Kwenders nominated for their work.
Lastly Alvvays, U.S. Girls, and Weaves join the shortlist. All three artists are returning Polaris contenders in 2015, 2016, and 2017 respectively.
