This year’s festival transformed into a vibrant celebration of documentary storytelling, featuring an impressive lineup of 173 screenings across 5 venues, accompanied by 162 engaging Q&As with filmmakers and guests. Highlights included four extended sessions in the Big Ideas series and three days of rich industry programming, marking the return of the Hot Docs Forum. Before it ended, the 2026 Hot Docs Festival celebrated a remarkable achievement, crowning Nekai Walks as the 33rd recipient of the prestigious Rogers Audience Award for Best Canadian Documentary. Directed by the talented Rico King, this film not only secured the festival’s top audience honour but also took home a generous cash prize of $50,000 CAD, thanks to the Rogers Group of Funds.
Immediately following the exciting award announcement, Nekai Walks made a triumphant return to the big screen for an additional free screening on May 3rd at 7:30 PM, giving audiences another chance to delve into this powerful documentary.
