Singaporean-born artist Nat Ćmiel, better known as Yeule, released a new album this year titled Evangelic Girl Is a Gun. Yeule’s style of making music puts the emphasis on heavy beats and sorrowful words that are heart-crushing. This is their fourth studio album, released with the record label Ninja Tune.
Utilizing multiple synth beats and electronic sound effects, their songs give off a futuristic vibe. Her 2014 EP Yeule, in comparison to Evangelic Girl Is a Gun, is much more of an alternative/indie style, similar to Saya Gray. Their first studio album, Serotonin II, released in 2019, is heavily experimental and soothing, and it is evident that their music has evolved and is now far from calm.
Yeule’s new album, Evangelic Girl Is a Gun, is an electronic, pop-rock-style album that will wow your ears when you hear it. Yeule’s soft, angelic voice contrasts with their dark lyrics. Many of their songs seem to reflect how it feels to be lost in your own world. Listeners will be captivated by the way their songs portray sadness, yet with a bit of hope. Their sound is so unique, what I would describe as gothic.
From the start of their album, songs such as “Tequila Coma” are more lighthearted, but as the album progresses, the tone darkens with songs such as “Evangelic Girl Is a Gun” and “Skullcrusher”. Even the title of the album Evangelic Girl Is a Gun highlights the recurring themes of purity and destruction. Their song “Eko,” to me, is about getting trapped in your own feelings within your mental state, as one of the lyrics states, “she’s a living, breathing, unreal being, who lives inside my head”. Their song “The Girl Who Sold Her Face” can be interpreted as trying to fit into the picture-perfect image of what society expects a girl to look and act like.
Yeule’s album stands the test of time as it is heavily influenced by 90s alternative rock, and shares the experience of feelings of doom and gloom. Their style is sort of futuristic in a sense ‒ with the electronic synth, and experimental pop sounds. If you enjoy listening to Saya Gray, My Chemical Romance or The Weather Station, to name a few, Yeule is the new artist to check out. Songs that I would highly recommend from the album are “Tequila Coma”, “The Girl Who Sold Her Face”, and “What3vr”.
