Have you ever dreamt of a younger, better version of yourself? What if you could turn back time, erase imperfections, and become the person you’ve always wished you could be? With a 7.3 IMDb rating, 90% on Rotten Tomatoes, and widespread praise from critics, The Substance (2024) has quickly become one of the most-talked-about films of the year. Released on September 20, 2024, the film follows Elisabeth Sparkle, a once-celebrated actress who faces devastation when her chauvinistic boss fires her from her popular aerobics show. Desperate to reclaim her youth and beauty, Elisabeth injects herself with a mysterious serum that promises to rejuvenate her. But things quickly spiral out of control, leading to horrifying consequences.

The Substance is a captivating mix of sci-fi, horror, psychological thriller, and drama. It has received nominations for Best Picture – making it the seventh horror film to achieve this nomination after several years – along with Best Director for Coralie Fargeat, Best Original Screenplay, and Best Actress for Demi Moore’s outstanding performance. The film also won an award for Makeup and Hairstyling and has earned multiple nominations and wins at the BAFTA Awards, Critics’ Choice Awards, and Golden Globes.

Critics have been unanimous in their praise for The Substance, particularly Demi Moore’s performance. Her portrayal of Elisabeth is raw and relatable, capturing the internal struggle of aging in an industry that often sidelines women past a certain age. The film explores the universal desire for a “younger, better version” of ourselves, but at what cost? Moore delivers a career-defining moment in her portrayal of Elisabeth, making the character’s emotional journey feel both deeply personal and globally relevant.

While the movie is emotionally charged, some viewers have noted that the pacing may be slow for certain tastes. The deliberate pacing and open-ended ending might leave some unsatisfied, but for others, it heightens the intensity and overall impact of the story. Personally, I found the ending a bit too heavy – almost too intense for my taste – but I can understand why it works so effectively within the narrative. It is a thrilling blend of suspense and horror that truly gets under your skin. From a technical standpoint, I was thoroughly impressed by the film’s editing. The non-linear structure with its seamless transitions between timelines and character-driven moments, keeps the audience engaged– even during the quieter, slower scenes. The emotional beats land with remarkable precision, and the film’s clever use of sound effects and music draws you deeper into the experience. There is one particular interview scene where the contrast of sound and visuals is so effective, that it makes you feel every emotion the characters are experiencing.

While Demi Moore undoubtedly steals the show, the film’s supporting cast – Margaret Qualley and Dennis Quaid – bring immense depth to a story already rich in emotional complexity. Both actors add layers to their respective characters, enhancing the overall impact of the narrative.

The Substance is a standout film for anyone seeking a unique experience that blends horror and thriller with emotional depth. It is a film that stays with you long after the credits roll, prompting reflection on themes like aging, self-worth, and the consequences of our decisions. If you’re not into jump scares but still want something that will keep you on the edge of your seat, this is definitely worth watching.
