Thirty one affordable housing units for queer youth now under construction

The city is beginning construction on a new affordable housing project at 7 Vanauley St., near Queen St. W. and Spadina Ave., supporting unhoused 2SLGBTQ+ youth.

Based on the 2021 Street Needs Assessment conducted by the City of Toronto, almost one quarter of youth staying in city-administered sites identified as 2SLGBTQ+.

The building, set to open in less than a year, is receiving funding through the federal government’s Rapid Housing Initiative addressing Toronto’s ongoing housing crisis. The site will also offer wrap-around services including mental health support, job training and legal assistance.

Dr. Alex Abramovich, a scientist and professor addresses the issue of 2SLGBTQ+ youth homelesssness for the last 15 years, explains why having spaces designated for queer and trans people is so critical right now.
