City Councillor Josh Matlow brought a motion to this week’s city council— another try at getting Ontario Place’s land back to avert “disaster.” Seconded by Deputy Mayor Ausma Malik, the motion asks City Manager Paul Johnson, in consultation with the City Solicitor and other related divisions, to come back to council next month with a status update on construction, permitting, approvals and land transfers to the Therme spa project.
The Ontario government came under international heat last week after a New York Times Investigation uncovered the European spa company Therme, the company the provincial government signed a 95-year lease with costing taxpayers $2.24 billion, had been exaggerating its experience in its bid to secure the Ontario Place land.
Matlow says he would have liked Toronto to take a stand a long time ago. So what can they do now? Does the city have any power at all? Here’s the latest on what’s happening with Ontario Place: the now-plowed waterfront land.
